Every year, the scientists at the Herbal Medicinal Products Platform Austria (HMPPA) choose the medicinal plant of the year. This year she chose saffron.

“Red Gold” – Saffron doesn’t just have this name as a spice, it could also be called that in the world of psychotropic drugs. Because saffron is considered a naturally effective antidepressant. Various studies and meta-analyses have proven the antidepressant effect of saffron for mild to moderate depression symptoms. (1-2) The medicinal plant is significantly superior to placebo and is on a par with well-known synthetic antidepressants. Saffron has a long tradition as a medicinal plant for menstrual problems and mood disorders. Even in ancient times it was used as a medicinal plant to relieve pain. Today we know that crocine and the aromatic safranal are primarily responsible for its effects. Saffron not only has a mood-enhancing and calming effect, but also has a relaxing, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effect. It also improves brain performance, strengthens concentration and is well tolerated.

No wonder that saffron is used as a promising option in the natural treatment of depressive moods and as an ideal companion for PMS (premenstrual syndrome) or during menopause.
