Rona McDaniel has resigned as head of the Republican Party just nine months before the US presidential election. He announced his resignation on Monday (February 26) after pressure from the party’s potential candidate in the election, former President Donald Trump. British news agency Reuters reported this news.

McDaniel’s resignation announcement reflects Trump’s influence in the Republican Party. He is preparing to face Democratic President Joe Biden again in the November elections.

After a meeting with McDaniel in early February, Trump wrote on social media that he would press for changes at the Republican National Committee after the South Carolina primary. Trump easily defeated the state’s former governor Nikki Haley in the primary held on Saturday.

Two weeks ago, the chair of the North Carolina Republican Party endorsed Michael Watley as the next head of the Republican National Committee. He also supported daughter-in-law Laura Trump as co-chair to strengthen his position in the party.

McDaniel said in a statement that historically the Republican National Committee has changed when the nominee has been found. I have always wanted to pay homage to this tradition. I am committed to winning back the fight for the White House.

McDaniel thanked Trump. He said his resignation will be effective at the Republican National Committee meeting on March 8.

The Republican National Committee plays an important role in raising money for the party’s nominee. They promote the party’s message and work to ensure voter turnout. McDaniel’s successor will face the challenge of unifying a divided party.
