From Thursday (11th), all 27 Brazilian states and the Federal District issue the new National Identity Card (CIN). This change meets the deadline established by the federal government for the necessary update by local identification agencies. With this, the document provides for a unified emission standard and plans to replace the RG (General Registration) number with the CPF. This measure aims to curb identification fraud in Brazilian territory.
The new card will use the Individual Taxpayer Record (CPF) number, issued by the Federal Revenue Service, as its standard numbering. This will make the document valid throughout the Brazilian territory, unlike the RG, which is issued separately by each state. In this way, the CPF will be used in practically all documents, allowing, with a simple numerical combination, government bodies to have access to all the information of a citizen, such as CNH, voter card, work card, among others.
How can I request a new Identity Card?
The Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services clarifies that the CIN can be issued at the Identification Institutes of the States and the Federal District. To obtain the first copy of the CIN it is necessary to present the birth or marriage certificate. Once the first copy has been released, the citizen will be able to use it digitally through the Gov.br application.
Expiration date of the new Identity Card
The validity of the new document varies depending on the age group: five years for children up to 12 years old, ten years for people from 12 to 60 years old and valid for life for those over 60 years old.
There is no need to immediately exchange your ID for your CIN. The ID will remain valid until February 28, 2032, providing sufficient time to update the document.
Is it necessary to pay the CIN?
Both the first copy and the renewal of the CIN will be offered free of charge. As with the National Driving License (CNH), the document will be available in physical and digital versions.
