The first Yutong railway bus will circulate in Cuba

SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- In the midst of an unfortunate transportation crisis, Cuban officials have opted to convert disused buses into railway buses, an invention that transforms a bus out of service into vehicles capable of traveling on the railway.

According to a report in the local newspaper Forwardthe workers of the Transport Company and the Base Business Unit (UEB) Talleres Ferroviarios de Camagüey will launch the first railway bus, Yutong brand, which should be ready on June 28, coinciding with Transport Worker’s Day.

Although the fact of the technical transformation of the vehicle was presented as a triumph, this is a consequence of a crisis that has left the bus fleet disabled.

Carlos Sanz Guerra, a railway specialist who retired 13 years ago, said that the conversion began in 2020, but they had to pause it due to the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic, the lack of acetylene, as well as several parts of the vehicle.

The Yutong vehicle was taken to Camagüey from Havana because “it lacked several components” and it was decided to transform it.

The bumper, the sandbox, the railway wheels and other accessories were added to the bus to circulate on the railway track.

Solution to the crisis?

The technicians commented that in Cuba transformations of this type had been carried out with Diana buses, but with Yutong they are more complex due to the dimensions of the vehicle, about 12 meters in length.

The railway will have capacity for 36 people seated and 25 stops, and will circulate between the municipalities of Santa Cruz del Sur and Vertientes.

Last year, the Camagüey Provincial Transportation Company revealed that the bus fleet operated at 35% of its capacity due to “a shortage of fuel and spare parts.”

On the other hand, the railway only had two frequencies a week in 2023, with trips to Nuevitas and Santa Cruz.

To deal with the crisis, authorities have had to rent 12 pieces of equipment to individuals, with plans to rent another 30 vehicles.
