Pilar Montenegro: The Discreet Reappearance

Pilar Montenegro, once a prominent personality in Mexico and Latin America during the 90s, was widely recognized for her involvement in the musical group Garibaldi and her appearances in popular Mexican soap operas. However, since 2013, her presence gradually started to diminish. She was diagnosed with ataxia, a motor disorder that affects coordination in body movement, leading her to retreat from the spotlight.

Although she may not be constantly in the public eye anymore, Pilar Montenegro occasionally shares glimpses of her personal life through photographs and videos on her social media accounts. However, these posts are always devoid of specific dates or locations. For instance, her most recent updates showed her celebrating her birthday on May 31, albeit in a low-key manner.

In one video, she can be seen reciting verses from the song “Take that man away from me,” which was the single from her second album Relief released in 2001.

While her discreet reappearance has been warmly received, some skeptics doubt the authenticity of these recordings. Pilar Montenegro chooses to maintain an air of secrecy but appreciates the outpouring of affection from her fans. She expressed her gratitude, stating, “Thank you for your beautiful messages. They serve as a reminder that love endures, even with the passage of time. Your love is always in my heart.”

A Decade of Absence

Before joining Garibaldi alongside Sergio Mayer, Patricia Manterola, Charly López, and Víctor Noriega in the late 80s, Pilar Montenegro was part of the group Fresas con Crema. During that time, she worked alongside Andrea Legarreta, who is now the host of the program Today on Televisa.

From 1989 to 1996, Montenegro was a member of the group created by Luis de Llano. In 1996, she embarked on a solo career while simultaneously diversifying her portfolio with villainous roles in television dramas such as Marisol, Droplet of Love, and I Am Your Master.

She released four more albums before performing for the last time on stage in October 2013 in the play El Comitenorio. Afterward, she decided to step away from the limelight entirely.

Rumors began to circulate shortly after her withdrawal from the industry. Speculations included allegations of alcohol addiction, Hepatitis C, HIV, and various deformities such as elephantiasis or dermatitis. In a subsequent interview with the Notimex agency, Montenegro clarified that her artistic career was no longer her priority. She stated, “What matters most to me now is my personal life. While I still enjoy singing and taking on interesting projects, I am no longer dependent on being an artist or being famous.”

In 2016, news circulated that Montenegro was confined to a wheelchair. However, her colleagues Mayer and López promptly refuted this claim, asserting that her desire was to distance herself from the entertainment industry entirely.

Montenegro reassured her fans a year ago, stating, “Today, I feel better than ever. Thank you all for your concern and messages. However, I am not in a wheelchair, and I am thankful that I can still freely engage in physical activities. I hope you all enjoy your vacations to the fullest.”

These occasional messages from the former singer serve as a testament to her resilience and determination in the face of her ongoing battle with illness.
