Champions League is the most popular and crowded football event, it is known only to sports lovers. Not only in football, this Champions League was also in cricket. But that was almost 10 years ago. Which was called Champions League T20 or CLT20.
Last Cricket Champions League was held in 2014. Then the tournament was closed. The 2014 tournament featured three teams from India, two each from Australia and South Africa and one each from New Zealand, West Indies and Pakistan. Chennai Super Kings won the title by defeating Kolkata Knight Riders in the final of that season.
Discussions have started to return the Champions League to cricket. The three big boards of the cricket world are sitting in discussion; Indian Cricket Board- BCCI, England Cricket Board- ECB and Cricket Australia (CA).
The offer to negotiate came from Australian team Cricket Victoria CEO Nick Cummins. He claimed that the biggest challenge in resuming the tournament would be finding a free time from the busy cricket calendar.
“I think the Champions League was ahead of its time,” said Nick Cummins in Mumbai on Tuesday. The T20 landscape was not that mature at that time. Which has now happened. I know that there are active discussions between Cricket Australia, the ECB and the BCCI about the Champions League.’
Nick added, ‘Trying to find a free time out of the busy cricket calendar. When this tournament will be organized, that is the biggest problem. Because there are all ICC tournaments as well. It could be that the first iteration of the Champions League will be held by women’s cricket. The girls are now playing in the WPL, The Hundred and the WBBL.’
Indian cricketers do not play franchise cricket in other countries. Again Pakistani cricketers do not come to play in IPL in India. Because of that, there is really no comparison – IPL is the best or Pakistan’s PSL or Australia’s Bigbag. Even which country’s cricketers are the best can be brought out through the Cricket Champions League.
Nick believes the Champions League T20 could be the only strategy to pick the best franchise team. He said, when Melbourne Stars play against Mumbai Indians or Karachi Kings, it will be understood who is the best. Look at Champions League football. The World Cup is definitely great. But Champions League football is getting better and better every year.’
