Artur Serobyan, the midfielder of the Armenian national football team, returned to “Ararat-Armenia” from the Portuguese “Casa Pia”. The 20-year-old footballer moved to the Portuguese club on loan in the fall of 2023. Serobyan participated in 4 games and scored one goal in “Casa Pia”. The midfielder spent 4 seasons in the main team of “Ararat-Armenia”, participating in 40 matches and scoring 7 goals. Another midfielder of the Armenian national team, Zhirayr Shaghoyan, also returned to “Ararat-Armenia”. In the fall of 2022, the 22-year-old football player was transferred to the Bulgarian “BKMA Sofia” on loan, in which he played 26 matches and became the author of 2 goal assists. Zhirayr Shaghoyan joined the team of “Ararat-Armenia” in 2018. As part of the Yerevan club, the midfielder played 64 matches and scored 11 goals, and became the champion of Armenia in the 2018/19 season.
Shaghoyan and Serobyan are among the most promising football players of Armenia, and we have high hopes for them. We called their departure from “Ararat-Armenia” a step forward, thinking that after some time the quality of the game will increase. The return of Shoghoyan and Serobyan in the middle of the season gives reason for reflection and conclusions. In any case, our football players cannot be accused of playing badly or failing in what happened. For every player, football is first of all a job, a means of livelihood. Each football player plays as much as he can. Perhaps the problem is about the conditions and the platform where Sharoghyan or Serobyan is stationed as a football player. The example of these football players is a clear proof of the fact that in our country there is essentially no football school, there is no platform for growth and self-expression. Bulgaria’s championship is not one of the strongest in Europe, but here and there one of the best midfielders of Armenia could not strengthen himself and have his say in Sofia BCMA. It cannot be said with certainty that upon returning to “Ararat-Armenia” Shoghoyan and Serobyan will play in the starting lineup of the team and will show an effective game. The core of the Armenian clubs are the legionnaires, and the local football players are simply in the shadows. Club owners are trying to achieve results by inviting foreign players. It would be wrong to blame the owner of “Ararat-Armenia” or “Pyunik” in this matter.
They move according to the statute that was established by the football federation. The latter, in its turn, tries to create such conditions for the clubs to motivate them to move forward in the European arena. However, let’s admit that the prospect of moving forward in the European Cups and solving financial problems creates a barrier for local football players. The picture is really sad. Not having a football school, we destroy the existing staff in the Armenian Championship. Today, there is not a single football player in our country who is interested by top teams. According to reports, one of the leaders of “Pyunik” Hovhannes Harutyunyan will move to “Sochi”. This is perhaps the milestone reached by football players performing in Armenia. A rejected championship, the participating teams of which do not even have the opportunity to play in the European Cups. Time and reforms are needed to solve the existing problem. As long as the Armenian championship is held under the auspices of the FFA, the football department remains responsible for the situation.
At this moment, perhaps the first step towards solving the global problem is being marked. Set a limit of legionnaires. In particular, each team should have at least 5 Armenian football players on the field during the game. Yes, this decision will affect the general playing level of the championship, but there is simply no other way out. We have no right to rely only on football players living in Russia or other countries. If we don’t train normal football players, after years we will not have Armenian football at all.
