The American B-52 Stratofortress strategic bomber will arrive this week for the first time at a South Korean air base, which could trigger a sharp reaction from North Korea, the Yonhap news agency reports, citing sources.
The landing of a bomber capable of carrying nuclear weapons at the South Korean base is intended to demonstrate the United States’ desire to be present in the region. It will be “another show of force” in the context of the growing nuclear missile threat from Pyongyang, according to Washington and its allies, as well as North Korea’s planned launch of a military reconnaissance satellite, the agency adds.
US strategic bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons have previously flown over the Korean Peninsula as part of joint exercises.
