On Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at the headquarters of the US State Department in Washington, American and Moroccan officials and diplomats celebrated the strategic alliance and multidimensional partnership between Morocco and the United States.

This came during the announcement of the inclusion of the American Legation in Tangier on the annual list of the National Trust for Historic Preservation (National Trust for Historic Preservation) of the 11 American historical sites at risk.

The ceremony was an occasion for the participants to affirm, in their words, the long-standing ties between the United States and Morocco, which share the longest uninterrupted friendship treaty.

Commenting on this historic strategic alliance between the two countries, Hassan Ramo, a professor at the University Institute of African, Euro-Mediterranean and Ibero-American Studies affiliated with Mohammed V University in Rabat, said, “There are two basic dimensions to this. The first relates to the historical fact that confirms Morocco’s recognition – which was a great power – of the mandates.” The United States of America as a young, emerging country, in a very difficult historical period that witnessed international competition between great powers, including the British Empire, the colonial dimension of the Iberian countries, and the expansion of the French Empire through its colonies in a group of countries such as Egypt.

As for the second dimension of this alliance, Ramo added in a statement to Hespress, it is “a political dimension that confirms that relations between the two countries can only be strengthened, for several considerations, including the fact that Morocco is the only country that has a free trade agreement with the United States of America, from which it can benefit (the agreement). ) A group of African countries, especially the Sahel and Sahara countries, if they participate in the initiative of His Majesty King Mohammed VI aimed at connecting them to the Atlantic Ocean, including Mauritania.

The same spokesman pointed out that “history seems to be repeating itself when talking about relations between Morocco and the United States of America. Just as Morocco currently plays the role of a continental regional actor in the region and is considered a platform for launching a group of investments in the direction of the Sahel, Sahara and West African countries, the United States of America was relying on The Kingdom, as an empire that has been reckoned with a thousand times since the Battle of Wadi Al-Makhzen, as a regional player at the level of North Africa and the Sahel to the borders of the Gulf of Ghana.”

The same university professor concluded, “It is necessary to translate the level of trust that relations between the two countries have reached into reality, by accelerating the opening of the programmed consulate in Dakhla, with an investment and economic dimension, and strengthening these relations to a level that benefits the peoples of both countries.”

For his part, Mohamed Boudin, an expert in contemporary international affairs, said, “The exchange of agreements, treaties, diplomatic missions, official visits, and advanced positions formed, over decades, a chapter in a common history of relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States of America, which reflects the level of trust between the two countries.”

Boden pointed out, in a statement to Hespress, that “the United States of America’s relations with Morocco preceded its relations with any other country, so its historical and strategic balance and solid foundations allow it to renew various high-level ties, especially the economic partnership, strategic dialogue, and defense cooperation, of which the African Lion maneuvers represent a prominent title.” for him”.

The same expert continued: “Today, 248 years have passed since Morocco recognized the United States of America in 1777, and bilateral relations have been constantly rejuvenating,” pointing out that “one of the images that reflects the distinguished nature of relations between the two countries is when George Washington, the first president of the United States, addressed American, in the year 1789, Sultan Muhammad bin Abdullah III with my great and wonderful friend, and then what the American diplomatic leg represents in Tangier as a sign of the legacy of relations between the two countries.”

Mohamed Boudin highlighted that “Morocco is an essential ally of the United States of America outside NATO, the only partner in Africa that enjoys a free trade agreement with it, and its main interlocutor on issues of peace and security in Africa and the Middle East.”

The spokesman stated that “Moroccan-American relations benefit from this historical momentum, such that, since 2020, a series of steps and exchanges have been taken to strengthen the future direction of relations,” saying in this context: “If the firm and frank American position regarding the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco, and the visit of delegations The United States to the Moroccan Sahara represents a great impetus for investing in various job opportunities between the two countries. America’s continued praise of the development agenda of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, and the effective Moroccan role in efforts to combat terrorism, reflect the clear strategic importance of the Kingdom of Morocco in the American perspective towards Atlantic Africa and the Euro-Mediterranean space.” .
