After three decades, a 10-day Baisakhi fair has been organized in Jessore. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Abraul Hasan Majumder inaugurated the fair at the town hall ground on Saturday afternoon. The fair will continue till April 22. An initiative has been taken to highlight the traditions and folk culture of rural Bengal in the ten-day long fair.

Chairman Sadar Upazila Parishad Mustafa Farid Ahmed Chowdhury, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) SM Shaheen, Additional Superintendent of Police Noor-e Alam Siddiqui, Jessore spoke on the occasion under the chairmanship of Baisakhi Mela Organizing Committee Convener and Deputy Director of Local Government Department of Jessore District Commissioner Rafiqul Hasan. General secretary of the institute Dr. Abul Kalam Azad, Acting President of Jessore Combined Cultural Association Dipankar Das Ratan, General Secretary of Jessore District Art Academy Adv. Mahmud Hasan Bulu, Vice President Faraji Ahmed Saeed Bulbul, cultural personality Haroon Or Rashid, Vasudev Biswas, Panna Lal Dey and others.

Sanwar Alam Khan Dulu, general secretary of Sammilita Sanskari Jot, moderated the program. The organizers said that the combined cultural alliance and Jessore Institute jointly organized the 10-day folk culture festival and Baisakhi fair 1431 with the cooperation of the district administration.

The fair will run from 30 Chaitra 1430 to 9 Baisakh 1431 (April 13 to 22) at Jessore Town Hall Grounds. There are 60 stalls in Boishakhi fair. The stalls showcase the traditions and folk culture of rural Bengal. Various traditional products are available in the stalls. ‘Pavilion’ named after prominent people of Jessore and the late culture people of the district are also honored in various ways in the fair.

A total of 130 cultural organizations of the district and upazila including Jessore will participate in the entire event. Bengali folk dances such as Kabigan, Patgan, Gambhira, Zarigan, Sang Yatra, Lathikhela, Snake dance will be displayed continuously.

The cultural program is divided into two parts. Every day from afternoon onwards there will be child friendly activities with children of all organizations. This is our special initiative to take forward the next generation. Besides, every evening cultural workers of Jessore will present programs.
