Usually the captain alone speaks at the award ceremony after the game. But Tamim Iqbal broke the tradition on Friday. When South African director Ackerman called the Fortune Barisal captain to speak after the final, Tamim called along two senior cricketers, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad.
Why go talk to the conductor together with them? Coming to speak in the official press box, the Barisal captain made a significant point in his explanation, saying – I dedicated the BPL trophy to Mushfiq and Riyad Bhai.
Tamim said, ‘Of course any trophy is fantastic. But there were some in our team, some young players called Miraj or Soumya. Two senior cricketers Riyad Bhai, Mushfiq. They have been serving the country for a long time. But they have not got this trophy yet. My own desire was that if Allah gives us (the trophy), then I will dedicate this trophy to them.’
Elaborating further, Tamim said, ‘I know Miraz, Soumya, Taijul have a lot of time ahead of them to win many trophies. I don’t know how long Riyad bhai and Mushfiq bhai will play. The way they have performed may continue. But not as much as others. For this reason, I have taken them during the presentation. Because they’ve come close to winning before.’
Did you have a different target or show in mind? Tamim said, ‘There was no personal emotion. Maybe it can come into the field. However, I could not have come this far if I had played with showing or something like that in mind. I want to do well. Maybe not in the best shape, but wanted to contribute.’
