Luis Díaz is one of the most important Colombian soccer players in recent years and his talent has taken him to three clubs: Júnior de Barranquilla, Porto (Portugal) and Liverpool (England). There was a legal dispute between the first two that was finalized this week.

The Colombian was sold from Porto to Liverpool and the percentage corresponding to the Barranquilla team never arrived. A money that the Júnior directors had, after an important sale that will remain in the history of the club and the Colombian footballer in his professional career.

Júnior de Barranquilla has ensured that it receives the amount owed of 8 million euros for the transfer of Luis Díaz to Liverpool, following the favorable resolution of FIFA in a legal dispute against Porto. The governing body of football ruled that, in contravention of what was agreed, the Portuguese club must pay the Colombian institution, before the end of 2024, 20% of the value of the footballer’s transfer, instead of the 6 million euros initially proposed . This decision can still be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The conflict arose when Porto allegedly did not comply with the payment of commissions agreed with Júnior de Barranquilla. According to the contract, the Colombian club had not only a participation in the transfer, but also 5% through a solidarity mechanism and 10% for the intermediary’s commission.

However, Porto did not make said payment. Lawyer Marcelo Bee Selllares, specialist in sports and administrative law, highlighted the obligation to pay the “5% deducted through solidarity mechanism + 10% intermediary commission” and that Porto did not prove the commission owed to Junior.

To date, Júnior de Barranquilla has received a total of €4,709,897 and, with the recent ruling by FIFA, expects to obtain an additional €3,299,897 until September 2024. The FIFA decision could be altered if Porto achieves a favorable ruling in his appeal before the CAS. In the sporting field, Luis Díaz is expected to play in Liverpool’s next match after suffering knee discomfort during the match with Arsenal.

FIFA’s recognition of Júnior de Barranquilla creates a significant precedent in terms of respect for solidarity agreements between clubs in international transfers. The Colombian league club will be able to strengthen its economic and football structure thanks to these funds, which will have a direct impact on future planning and hiring.
