The first batch of locally produced combat drones has been delivered to the Taiwan Armed Forces and will be inspected over the next week, local media reported, referring to an anonymous military source.

According to regulations, military drones manufactured on the island must have a local content percentage of 80%. Only four companies out of the eight presented were able to meet the standard required to participate in the procurement program, the source stated, adding that the list of contractors will be finalized on Tuesday next week, when reviews are carried out.

According to the source, such a policy will contribute to the arms industry and supply chain in Taiwan. Currently, a large part of the components used to manufacture drones are imported and only the final assembly is carried out on the island.

With the confirmed projects of the flying devices, the production of five types is contemplated for different deployment needs, including surveillance and reconnaissance on ships, on land, general observation and target acquisition. In addition, a small size model was designed to minimize the possibility of enemy detection. Once the contractors are approved, the Taiwan Army will acquire 3,000 drones, which will receive them in October.

Previously, US President Joe Biden approved a $345 million military aid package for the island. This is the first major package provided by Washington, in which the Biden Administration even uses the country’s own reserves to help Taiwan counter China. With RT
