The defending champions did not show their fangs from the first minute, even trailing 1-0 after Remo Freuler scored in the 37th minute.
Luciano Spalletti’s team then appeared with six players lining up along the halfway line as the second half started.
When they attacked, Italy tried to pump the ball up the pitch. However, the long kick was not on target and was easily stopped.
Meanwhile, Switzerland moved forward quickly, leaving Italy in disarray. Michel Aebischer gave a pass to Ruben Vargas, who then directed the ball towards the top corner.
Italy’s first-choice goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma got a hold of the ball but was unable to hold on to it – and Switzerland doubled their lead just 27 seconds into the second half.
“That was the worst kick-off I’ve seen all tournament from Italy, giving the ball straight away,” wrote one fan on social media.
Due to this bad result, Gianluigi Donnarumma could not hide his disappointment. He also apologized to Italian fans for the team’s disappointing performance.
“We can only apologize to our fans. This is unacceptable, we played badly throughout the match. That’s the reality. We played very badly in the first half. That’s the reality, we have to accept it,” said Donnarumma.
