The Olympic Committee of El Salvador (COES) this Saturday held its 2024 general assembly in which different presidents and representatives of sports federations participated.

The INDES Sports Development Manager, Dinora Acevedo, participated as a special guest at the assembly, and Juan José Gómez, INDES administrative manager and president of the Salvadoran Fencing Federation, also attended; René Martínez, general director of INDES and vice president of the Salvadoran Triathlon Federation.

Another of the guests was Héctor David Hernández Vega, president of the Paralympic Committee of El Salvador (COPESA) and Alexis Martínez, preparer of the management report.
The first item on the agenda was the reading of the previous minutes, which was led by Roberto Calderón, general secretary of the COES and legal manager of the National Sports Institute of El Salvador (INDES).

Then it was the turn of José Armando Bruni, president of the COES, with the presentation of the 2023 work report, in which he mentioned achievements in the sports area, new alliances and strategies, project area, among other important sections.

In the sports area, the head of the COES highlighted the participation and results of El Salvador’s athletes in the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games and the San Salvador 2023 Games and the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.

“2023 was the year where the foundation has really been laid for what we hope will be the El Salvador Olympic Committee in the next, at least, 10 years. That is quite significant,” Bruni said.

“We had two international events of great character, the Central American and Caribbean Games and the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. In San Salvador we had a historic participation, hosting strengthened our delegation and at this point I want to make special recognition to the National Sports Institute and the Government of El Salvador for the historic investment in sports venues,” commented Bruni.

In addition, the president of the COES emphasized that now and under his administration he works hand in hand with the Government of El Salvador and the National Sports Institute of El Salvador (INDES), whom he defined as strategic allies.

The Olympic leader also mentioned that El Salvador had a historic participation in the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games, which were held in the Salvadoran capital from June 23 to July 8, with a total of 28 medals, including eight others, three silver and 17 bronzes.

Bruni also recalled that in San Salvador 2023 the new COES philosophy was fulfilled: “the games of the Olympic Cycle are not practice sessions, they are competition.”

Regarding Santiago 2023, he said that it was the fourth best participation of the Salvadoran delegation and the medal amount from Lima 2019 was equal. He also highlighted the gold of Roberto Hernández and Douglas Nolasco in the men’s compound archery team event.

With this result, the Santaneco archer establishes himself as the first Salvadoran athlete to win a gold medal in two different editions of the Pan American Games.

Among other relevant data, Bruni mentioned the support for athletes through Olympic scholarships. “When we received the El Salvador Olympic Committee, 12 athletes were supported, but a great effort was made to increase this support in 2023 and we managed to have a total of 37 continental scholarship recipients,” he stressed.

In the area of ​​Communications and marketing, the 95% growth in its different social media platforms stood out and there is a need to generate sports culture in the country.

“This Olympic Committee of El Salvador must recover international prestige,” was one of the actions that Bruni defined in the New Alliances and Strategies area of ​​his work report.

“The year 2023 marked the beginning of Media Partners’ strategy in promoting and disseminating the achievements of Salvadoran athletes in the most important sports events,” explained Bruni.

The presentation of the financial report, the Work Plan and Annual Budget 2024 were other points on the agenda.
