Upper Austrians and Salzburgers are the most dependent (75 percent).

Vienna (OTS) For two thirds or 65 percent of Austrians, the car is still indispensable for their daily journeys. In 2023 it was still 58 percent. This is shown by the survey conducted by Integral on behalf of AutoScout24 among 500 Austrians. Unsurprisingly, it is primarily people who commute to work or training who, with a large majority of 87 percent, say they are completely dependent on their wheels for day-to-day activities. This also applies to 90 percent of those who are not well connected to public transport or not at all. But 50 percent of those surveyed who are very well connected to public transport also need a car to manage their family and job.

In which federal states the car is particularly needed

Almost every second person in Burgenland, Styria and Carinthia absolutely needs their car for their daily routine – a total of 72 percent in these federal states rely heavily on the car. This value is only higher in Upper Austria and Salzburg at 75 percent. In Tyrol and Vorarlberg the distances are apparently shorter in some cases and only 54 percent use the automobile for their daily business. In Vienna, dependency has increased from 27 percent in the previous year to currently 35 percent.

Families and young people use cars more often

Cars are also more popular among the young population aged 18-29. 72 percent use their car in everyday life, compared to only 47 percent last year. The car is currently one of the most important means of transport, especially in households with children. In multi-person households, 45 percent say that they are completely dependent on the car. The survey recorded a significant increase from 55 percent to 68 percent among women, who are particularly dependent on the car in everyday life. 40 percent of women are completely dependent on the car for everyday life. In the age group between 30 and 49, one in two people also cannot live without their own vehicle. “The car has become much more important during the pandemic. However, normalization has apparently in no way led to Austrians needing cars less. Cars remain indispensable for many people in everyday life,” says Nikolaus Menches, Country Manager of AutoScout24 in Austria.

About the trend survey:
For the trend study, Integral market and opinion research surveyed 500 Austrian car owners between the ages of 18 and 69 online for AutoScout24 in February 2024, representative of this target group.
