Stomach cancer usually develops slowly and over many years, which is why it is so insidious. Mr. Ondřej found out about his diagnosis when he had a four-year-old daughter, Marička, and a nine-month-old son, Ondrášek.
The announcement of a serious illness came like a bolt from the blue. “The fight, the operation, the treatment began. Ondra lost his stomach and spleen. They fought Alča as hard as they could. Their whole lives have been turned upside down,” describes Alena’s friend Martina Bartošová.
They overcame the insidious disease, after a year Ondra returned to a normal life as far as possible, although forever with many restrictions. Everything seemed to be fine, the children were growing, the family was enjoying each day and enjoying each other. For six years, Ondra went for regular check-ups, everything was fine.
Dad died within a month
Until suddenly last June the results did not turn out very well. It turned out that the insidious disease had returned in an even more aggressive form. It was a desperate time where everyone was doing what they could but the cancer was stronger. “The relapses were very rapid, the disease reappeared in June, and in July the husband died,” describes the cruel moments of Mrs. Alena herself, who was suddenly left alone with her children and became a single mother.
Help with everyday life
That’s why my friend Martina started a fundraiser for Mrs. Alena on the charity platform Donio. “The goal of the collection is to overcome the difficult period that awaits a mother with two children. Securing their own housing, as they currently live for a limited time in a council apartment, and help to ensure other necessary family expenses. So that the children don’t have to stop attending the clubs and can enjoy the little things as well,” explains Martin and concludes: “No amount of money will replace dad and husband, but at least they wouldn’t have to worry so much about material things.”
1000 patients die annually
Approximately 1,300 cases of stomach cancer are newly diagnosed in the Czech Republic every year, and about 1,000 people die of this malignant tumor. Stomach cancer usually develops slowly and over many years. Before a truly malignant tumor develops, precancerous changes (precancerous) often appear in the gastric mucosa. These changes rarely cause symptoms or problems, so they usually go undetected.
Before the age of 35, the tumor occurs only rarely. In age groups over 45, however, the disease occurs more and more often, with the peak observed in patients aged 70-80.
