Supermarket check: Easter eggs come from Austria this year – 2024-03-20 17:16:00

Manufacturers are voluntarily labeling colorful eggs this Easter according to their origin and husbandry. You can hardly find imported Easter eggs. For Land, creating life is a step in the right direction.

Vienna (OTS) In the EU, and therefore also in Austria, every single fresh egg that is sold with the shell must be labeled according to the origin and husbandry of the laying hen. Easter eggs, on the other hand, are processed foods because of the cooking and dyeing involved. This eliminates the obligation to label origin and husbandry. During the Easter egg check* from Land creates life However, in the usual local supermarkets it became clear that all packaged Easter eggs offered there now contain information about their origin and husbandry – even though this does not have to be the case from a legal point of view. In addition, all eggs on offer come from Austria. Only when eggs are sold individually does it sometimes remain unclear where the eggs come from and how the chickens were kept. Maria Fanningerfounder of the association Land creates lifesays:

“With fresh eggs, we can see at first glance where they come from and how the chickens are kept. Once the egg is cooked and dyed, it is allowed to remain completely anonymous. The fact that this can still be the case in 2024 is actually incredible. It is all the more pleasing that manufacturers are now labeling voluntarily. This has the positive side effect that this year there are almost exclusively Easter eggs from Austria in local supermarkets. And shows: People want to know where their food comes from and how it is produced – especially when it comes to animal products.”

No caged Easter eggs

This year there are almost no Easter eggs from abroad in Austrian food retailers. Labeling the eggs also makes it easy for consumers to ensure that they are of Austrian origin. Maria Fanninger added:

“This means there is no longer any risk of people unknowingly using foreign cage eggs. In Austria it is forbidden to keep chickens in cages. However, around 90 percent of chickens worldwide still live in cages. You should also be careful with other processed foods such as ready-made cakes, pasta or mayonnaise. Because without information about husbandry and origin, one can assume that caged eggs from abroad are hidden in the product.”

When purchasing Austrian eggs, consumers can also pay attention to the way they are kept. There are some differences for the animals between organic, free-range and barn farming, for example in terms of exercise and stocking density in the stable. All relevant information is clearly summarized in the attached fact sheet.

* A total of 29 Easter egg packs were spotted in the supermarket check. Of these, five were labeled as organic eggs, eleven were free-range and thirteen were barn-raised. In addition, at the request of the four largest retail chains Land creates life confirms that only Austrian Easter eggs are stocked in the range.
