Superb and Passat price comparison: How do the siblings compare in terms of pricing and equipment?

At the end of August the new Volkswagen Passat was presented, followed by the Škoda Superb at the beginning of November. Both cars are much closer to each other than before: the new generations are direct sisters and even share a production line in Bratislava, Slovakia. However, how do they compare in a direct price comparison? We both have the price lists of the newly released new products on the table and we will compare them.

Before starting, it must be said that the price lists of both models are currently a bit “truncated”, and many options, especially in terms of engines, have yet to be added. Skoda for example, at the moment it has launched sales of the Superb only in the station wagon version, and with only one engine, namely the 2.0 TDI 110 kW. But this is absolutely sufficient for our purposes, because the sister Passat is only sold as a station wagon (the Superb will also have a liftback version), and although it currently has two engines in the price list, the 2.0 TDI 110 kW is not missing among them . Furthermore, it is usually one of the best-selling engines for models in this class.

First prize and what do we get?

The Volkswagen Passat has a starting price set at 999,900 crowns. However, for this amount, it is the lowest equipment with a 1.5 TSI engine. To compare the “starting line”, we opt for the Business trim in combination with the 2.0 TDI engine worth 1,175,900 crowns. The engine is combined with a seven-speed DSG dual clutch gearbox and front-wheel drive, which is the same as the Superb.

For the Superba, things are a little simpler, as the variant price list currently contains exactly two items. The engine is still a 2.0 TDI with 110 kW, only the equipment changes. The cheapest Selection costs 1,035,000 crowns.

Basically, the Superb will cost a good 140,900 crowns less, but how does the equipment itself compare? First, the important features you get same for both cars:

  • parking sensors and parking camera
  • front seats with massage and heating function
  • Automatic three-zone climate control
  • LED headlights with remote assistant
  • digital dashboard with 10″ display.
  • infotainment with touchscreen, 8 speakers and wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto
  • internal ambient lighting
  • wireless phone charging and USB-C connectors
  • keyless entry and starting
  • multifunction steering wheel
  • front assist (frontal collision assistant), lane keeping, road sign reading, blind spot monitoring

Furthermore, the Škoda Superb has the following equipment:

  • 17″ alloy wheels (Passat only 16″)

Furthermore, the Volkswagen Passat has the following features:

  • adaptive cruise control with tailgating function
  • 12.9″ infotainment display (Superb 10″ only)
  • integrated navigation
  • Park Assist for parking space measurement
  • heated steering wheel
  • spare wheel from the range (the Superb only has repair kits)

Additional features

Other differences between the cars are purely minor, but speak more in favor of the Škoda. It is equipped with many Simply Clever features, including phone pockets in the rear seats, an umbrella in the driver’s door, an ice scraper in the fuel tank cap or cargo elements in the trunk.

Even if the Passat is slightly better in the equipment comparison, the Superb easily manages to catch up. To compare the features of the Czech station wagon with the German one, just add the Assisted Driving 1.5+ packages for 16,000 crowns, the Climate Package for 15,000 crowns (where in addition to the heated steering wheel you also have heated windscreen and rear seats), Infotainment Navi 13″ with larger display for 25,000 crowns and spare wheel for 4,900 crowns At that time the equipment is practically the same and the Superb still costs 80,000 crowns less, despite the surcharges.

But there are additional features that make the Superb more expensive. If you opt for leather seats, they can only be purchased from Skoda as electrically adjustable ergonomic seats with ventilation and an improved massage function, complete with ambient lighting with RGB (arbitrarily adjustable lighting colour). The entire package will cost 110,000 crowns. In the Passat, however, separate ergoActive seats with leather upholstery can only be paid for separately for 54,800 crowns. The panoramic roof is also slightly more expensive: 40,000, which for the Passat costs only 33,400 crowns. And for completeness, the range of additional paints will also cost a few hundred crowns: for the Superb you pay 19,000 crowns more, for the Passat 18,300.

Fully equipped car

But what if we compare the highest equipment? We are still considering the same engine, but we are aiming for as many comfort elements as possible. For the Superb this means choosing the Laurin & Klement trim for 1,235,000 crowns, for the Passat the Elegance trim for 1,222,900 crowns. For the Passat we deliberately did not choose the R-Line equipment, which has the same comfort elements as the Elegance, but pays extra for the design.

Although the Superb is slightly more expensive here, it has some extra features for its price. Namely, they are:

  • 18″ wheels (the Passat has 17″)
  • leather seats
  • 14 speakers
  • panoramic parking system with automatic parking
  • heated rear seats and heated windshield
  • upside-down display
  • progressive management

What happens then when we select super-equipped cars with extra paint (we omit pearl white for the Passat) in the configurators, with 19″ wheels, with leather interior, panoramic windows, independent heating, towing equipment, the best chassis possible (without sports packages), infotainment, audio systems and driving assistants?

At the moment both models are practically comparable in terms of equipment, but the price difference is similar at the start. A fully equipped Superb costs 1,386,700 crowns, the Passat costs 1,511,200 crowns. The difference is therefore 124,500 crowns in favor of the Superba.
