Vienna (OTS) As part of a demonstration in front of the UNESCO office, it became known: the cab drivers’ application to be listed as intangible cultural heritage was rejected.

After it became public that Vienna’s horse-drawn carriages were making another attempt to secure their cruelty to animals as a UNESCO cultural heritage site (), the outcry was great. That’s why 20 animal rights activists gathered today in the rain in front of the office of the Austrian UNESCO Commission to send a clear signal against the planned inclusion.

With banners, signs and loudspeaker announcements, the demonstration participants informed passers-by and UNESCO employees about the grievances in the horse-drawn carriage company. The demonstrators chanted “Horses out of the city!” and distributed leaflets.

Then the Secretary General appeared in front of the animal rights activists and announced: The decision has already been made, the Viennese horse-drawn carriages are still not on UNESCO’s national list of intangible cultural heritage. The Viennese Fiakers also do not appear in the list of newly added practices that has just been published.

VGT Fiaker campaigner Georg Prinz is live on site at the demonstration, where the news is greeted with cheers: “We feel confirmed and are very relieved that the Viennese Fiaker’s transparent campaign to declare their cruelty to animals a cultural heritage is being repeated again failed miserably. Given the many legal violations committed by the Viennese Fiakers, the UNESCO Commission probably had no other choice.”

Prinz continued: “We hope that this decision will lead to a rethink and that the Viennese Fiakers and the Vienna city councilor for animal protection Jürgen Czernohorszky will also recognize that the time of the Viennese Fiakers is over! Now we have to quickly phase out the Fiakers and establish Introduce alternatives!”

A city is no place for horses. Noise, exhaust fumes and traffic stress the sensitive animals.

Accidents and horses collapsing occur again and again.
