Submission instead of civic protest

PUERTO PADRE, Cuba.- Cuba is suffering one of the worst socioeconomic, demographic and civic crises in its history. With the Cuban peso, the depreciated national currency, with hardly any purchasing power and devalued like never before against the US dollar – the currency of “Yankee imperialism” -, the Cuban proletariat led by the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), has lost the ideological battle against its “enemy number 1”, the market economy and representative democracy.

But instead of exercising its “sovereignty” against a gluttonous ruling class, through civic protest on a day of labor demands, such as May 1, police repression and criminal action by the “justice” courts, Together with their spokesmen who have amplified the coercive message on radio, television and social networks, the totalitarian regime has managed to subject Cubans to the most incredible submission.

The recruited

Like criminals, caught red-handed to be recruited as undercover agents due to compromise (legal-police event in which there are only two alternatives, either the accused collaborates with the recruiter or goes to prison), this week and for days, the official union sign documents for the workers, in which they commit to attending the May 1st parades. “Colorful”, “colorful”, “patriotic” parades, which in reality are the screen of a repressive, economically needy regime.

With “non-state” workers, those in private micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), it is unnecessary to sign commitment documents.

The process is simpler, although equally effective due to its brutal official approval: the worker who does not parade on May 1st leaves, there are others waiting for that position; The business cannot fall into evidence. And, certainly, also among the “Mipymeros” the labor contract functions politically as with state workers or cooperatives, among them there are no “counterrevolutionaries” nor room for “counterrevolution”, nor political propaganda contrary to the “revolution”. Or they fall prisoner.

How is it possible for a human being, woman or man, in exchange for a job and a salary to hand over their freedom to their employer…?

Slogan day

While in the world May 1st is a day when workers demand rights, in Cuba this is a day of slogans and compliance with the Communist Party, which is a “single” party, but also, in fact and by law, is the only employer in Cuba, where employment or business contracts are not signed without their approval, which, necessarily, does not have to be oral or in writing, but, woe to the worker or the company if, in very subtle disapproving body language, the “Party” raises an eyebrow.

No. Fear is not the path to freedom. As a thinking being that he is, the human being in the achievement of his economic, political and civil rights does not need any leadership other than his own, he does not need any more guidance than the voice of his conscience. Politicians or political apprentices of all stripes have, on too many occasions, thrived and continue to thrive with the libertarian sentiments of their peers, and that, perhaps, is their greatest crime: cynicism.

Those who applaud

No. I don’t quite understand how Cuba has so many workers with miserable salaries, such as construction workers, laborers in agriculture, livestock, communal services or the proletariat of industries, including the sugar industry, that they were so fighting for their rights, today, exploited as they are, instead of protesting, they applaud.

Are these the rights of workers in Cuba? No. Hypocrisy is not the source of any rights. Submission is not the path to human improvement. And Cuba and the Cubans will continue to be miserable as long as they remain submissive. Honor, then, to those who are in prison today because one day with their voice they asserted their rights.
