Student representatives: more knowledge about food and nutrition required – 2024-04-04 21:55:17

Nutrition education should find a place in lessons and meals in schools should be improved, demand the federal student council and the Land Creates Life association.

Vienna (OTS) Our society is facing major challenges, be it the climate crisis or the increasing number of lifestyle diseases among the population. What all of these challenges have in common is that they are closely related to our food production and our eating and consumption behavior. Conscious consumption – and especially conscious food consumption – is an effective tool for meeting these challenges. However, you have to know how to do this. Maria Fanningerfounder of the association Land creates lifetakes the education system to task:

“Knowledge is the key to a healthier society and a healthier environment. Because if I know what is good for myself and my environment, then I can consciously choose certain foods. This knowledge about our food should therefore be just as much a part of the curriculum as reading, writing and arithmetic. Ultimately, this is about the health and quality of life of the next generation.”

Need to catch up at the school buffet

Only those who have the necessary knowledge can consume consciously – and of course have the opportunity to do so. However, this is not yet the case in the vast majority of schools. While extra sausage rolls, pizza slices and chocolate croissants are part of the standard offering at many school buffets, balanced regional and seasonal dishes are the exception. The students themselves are also demanding that this urgently change. Their demand is hardly surprising, after all, this is about nothing less than their own health and the sustainable design of their future.

That’s why the Federal Student Council (BSV) has dedicated this year’s campaign to exactly this topic. Under the title “Mindfuel – food awareness through education” the aim is to focus on health and nutrition education in Austrian schools and improve food provision. Land creates life supports you as a cooperation partner and provides documents and information. As federal student representatives, Marius Hladik (federal school spokesman) and Lorenz Baumgartner (LFLA spokesman) are the voice of over 1.1 million children and young people, and for them it is clear:

“The school of tomorrow should become a place where a healthy lifestyle is taught through appropriate training, exemplified within the school community and made possible through needs-based food provision.”
