Vienna (OTS/SK) – The EU supply chain law is in the interests of workers, the environment and the European economy. It obliges companies to exercise due care with regard to employee and environmental rights and is an important tool for the European economy to ensure that it does not get left behind in competition with global corporations. “I therefore call for a clear Austrian commitment to this and in particular for Economics Minister Kocher to agree to this law and not to abstain from voting,” SPÖ European spokesman Jörg Leichtfried told the SPÖ press service on Thursday. ****
A blockade of the supply chain law at the European level by Economics Minister Kocher would primarily play into the hands of those corporations that do not adhere to human rights or environmental regulations and thus make a profit. Leichtfried pointed out that the supply chain law means a strengthening of the local European economy: “Those who produce in Europe obviously have to adhere to high standards, bear high costs and pay high penalties if these standards are not met. But if Kocher has his way, global corporations should continue to be able to clean themselves up and make a profit from human rights violations and destroyed environments outside the EU.” Thousands of EPUs and SMEs in Austria, which already operate in a socially and ecologically sustainable manner, would benefit from a supply chain law. “So the question is whether Kocher supports responsible companies in Austria with his voting behavior or whether he represents the interests of large global corporations,” Leichtfried concluded.
