Important cycle connection in Josefstadt – greening, cooling – starting signal for the 2nd construction phase

Vienna (OTS) Pfeilgasse in the 8th district will become a climate-friendly bicycle street by the end of the year – with lots of greenery, cooling measures and traffic calming. In addition to new trees, large-scale unsealing, seating and drinking fountains, a high-quality cycle connection to the west of Vienna is being finalized. Construction work for the 2nd and final section from Strozzigasse – along Zeltgasse and Josefsgasse – to the so-called 2er line starts today, May 2nd, 2024, and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

This means that from the end of 2024, a continuous, attractive cycle connection to the city center, from the Belt to the 2er line, over a length of 1.2 kilometers can be used for climate-friendly mobility. As early as 2022, the former teachers’ parking lot in front of the school in Pfeilgasse, including the Lisette Model Square, was redesigned and made climate-friendly together with the district under the motto “Get out of the asphalt”.

“We are getting a lot of positive feedback about the already completed cycle connection in Pfeilgasse and I am now even more looking forward to the final stretch to the 2 line, which we will now implement by the end of the year and thus a really great connection to the city including greening measures create,” said Mobility City Councilor Ulli Sima. The Pfeilgasse is one of the many cycle path offensive projects that will be implemented or finalized this year.

District leader Martin Fabisch is also enthusiastic about the results so far and is looking forward to the completion of the climate-friendly Pfeilgasse cycle route: “Above all, the Pfeilgasse cycle route means more quality of life for Josefstadt residents through a fairer distribution of public space. Large-scale unsealing, more trees, comfortable seating, new drinking fountains – all of this helps to make your stay noticeably more pleasant. At the end of the year we also took an important step in terms of climate protection by redesigning the second section!”

Bicycle route with a total of 30 new trees and 4,700 m2 of unsealing

Already in the first section from Belt to Strozzigasse, 16 new trees were planted and 1,700 m2 were unsealed. The second section continues with even more green. A total of 14 trees and 16 standard shrubs are to be planted along a length of 440 meters – in the section from Strozzigasse to the 2er line – and around 330 m2 of green space will be created. To ensure the best possible growing conditions, they receive automatic irrigation. The green areas will also be planted with perennials. In total, around 3,000 square meters of area in the second section of Pfeilgasse will be unsealed through greening or paving.

Two drinking fountains along the section will provide fresh spring water in the future. A total of 14 non-consumption seating areas in public spaces also offer space to relax and chat. In addition, several small micro-open spaces will be created along the cycle path. Public lighting will be adjusted once the work and trees have been planted.

Climate-friendly Pfeilgasse: More space and traffic safety

Similar to the first section, the previously relatively narrow sidewalks will largely be widened to 2.5 meters and provided with permeable paving.

Attention is also paid to making the sidewalks barrier-free. For example, existing steps in the walking area should be partially removed.

The current diagonal parking regulations in Zeltgasse will be replaced by parallel parking regulations, and the parking strip here will also be unsealed with paving. The new street cross-section creates the best conditions for a high-quality bicycle street. Bicycle street means: The road is primarily intended for bicycle traffic; car drivers and motorcycle drivers must be considerate of cyclists, who are also allowed to ride next to each other here.

In this section, bicycle traffic is permitted in both directions, while car drivers must turn around in Josefsgasse, as this is being converted into a dead end. However, cyclists are still allowed to enter and exit Auerspergstrasse.

1st section Pfeilgasse: A look back at 2023

It is already possible to cycle safely in the 1st section of the cycle route from Belt to Strozzigasse, which was finalized in 2023. 16 new trees with colorful perennials and automatic irrigation were also installed. A drinking fountain provides additional refreshment during the hot summer months and 15 non-consumption seating areas enhance the area. In total, around 1,700 square meters of area were unsealed through greening or paving in the first section.

The school environment of Pfeilgasse and Lisette-Model-Platz will be redesigned in 2022

As early as 2022, the school forecourt in Pfeilgasse, including the Lisette Model Square, was redesigned and made climate-friendly together with the district under the motto “Get out of the asphalt”: a teacher’s parking lot was turned into a cool open space. Nine trees, seating areas, large shrubs, six new green areas with colorful flowers and a water feature with ground fountains provide more shade and cooling around the school.

The cycle path in the school area has already been adapted as part of the space design and now offers more safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The three meter wide two-way cycle path was designed so that there is sufficient distance from the sidewalk that leads to the school on the northern side of Pfeilgasse.

The final section up to the two-way line, which will now be completed by the end of 2024, including greening measures, is a worthy conclusion to the climate-friendly cycle route.
