It was a shock for football fans in Austria. Coach Bernd Himmelbauer (†43), who worked for the Union Unterweißenbach team, collapsed while jogging near his home at the end of January. However, despite the immediate help of rescuers, he could not be saved. His club is now asking the public for financial donations for the family of a deceased colleague.
Although Himmelbauer trained as a mechanical engineer, he was always more drawn to sports. In Union Unterweißenbach, he trained a team of older students, for which his son also played, and in addition to football, he was a great lover of cross-country skiing. In it, he won a number of prestigious prizes and also participated in several professional competitions under the banner of the International Ski Federation.
His close friend and colleague Hubert Nötstaller, who is still in shock several weeks after the accident, has also commented on the death of the popular trainer. “Bernd was a wonderful person and had a great character. He was also a keen sportsman and was well respected by the people here. A lot of guys followed their dreams mainly because of him.” said Nötstaller about his tragically deceased friend, who was also involved in the creation of the cycling section in Unterweißenbach.
“We are devastated by the sudden death of Bernd Himmelbauer. You will always have a place of honor in our club. Thank you for your commitment and work for our team. You leave us with so many wonderful memories that no one can take away. You were a great athlete and a great person and you will leave a huge hole in the world.” wrote on his Instagram his team, which is now asking the public to contribute financially to the carefree future of the two children Himmelbauer left behind.
