A series of earthquakes today, April 22, 2024, shook Taiwan and the strongest reached a magnitude of 6.3 with the epicenter in Hualien, in the east of the island, according to the Central Meteorological Agency.

Hualien was the epicenter of the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that shook Taiwan on April 3, 2024 and that left at least 17 dead and more than 1,100 injured.
He first earthquake of this Monday, April 22, 2024, magnitude 5.5, occurred at 5:08 p.m. (0908 GMT), according to the agency, and could be felt in the capital, Taipei. A series of aftershocks followed and, according to AFP journalists, the strongest movements occurred around 02:30 on Tuesday (18:30 GMT on Monday).
“I was washing my hands and suddenly I felt what seemed like vertigo,” Olivier Bonifacio, a tourist staying in Taipei’s Da’an district, told AFP.
“I went into my room and I realized that the building was swaying and I heard the desk creak,” he said, adding that it was then that he realized it was another aftershock.
According to Central Meteorological Agencythe shock had a magnitude of 6.0 and was followed six minutes later by another of magnitude 6.3.
The United States Geological Survey reported that they were magnitude 6.1 and 6.0 respectively. Earthquakes are common in Taiwan, since the island is located near the junction of two tectonic plates.
Back andThe earthquake of April 3, hundreds of aftershocks were recorded. That quake was the strongest in Taiwan since the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that hit the island in September 1999 and left 2,400 dead.
