Yemen – The UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, discussed yesterday, Monday, with the Saudi Ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed Al Jaber, ways to ensure continued support for UN mediation efforts to achieve peace in the country.
Grundberg’s office said in a brief statement on the X platform, “The UN envoy met in Riyadh (the time of his arrival was not specified) with the Saudi ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed Al Jaber.”
According to the same statement, the two sides discussed “the current developments in Yemen, the regional situation, and the potential repercussions (on peace efforts).”
They also discussed “ways to ensure continued concerted regional support for UN-sponsored mediation efforts for peace in Yemen,” without further details.
On December 23, 2023, Grundberg announced the commitment of the Yemeni government and the Houthi group to a set of measures for a “comprehensive ceasefire” throughout the country and improving living conditions for citizens.
However, during a briefing to the Security Council on Thursday, the UN envoy presented “a bleak picture of efforts to resolve the crisis in Yemen, indicating that the mediation process has become more complex, and that the Yemenis share his feeling of impatience in achieving their aspirations,” without details in this regard.
For some time now, regional and international efforts have been intensifying to find a comprehensive political solution to the crisis in Yemen, which included visits by Saudi and Omani delegations to Sanaa (north), and Gulf tours by envoys to Yemen: American Tim Lenderking and internationalist Hans Grundberg.
For about two years, Yemen has witnessed a lull in the war that began about 9 years ago between the forces loyal to the legitimate government, supported by an Arab military coalition led by neighboring Saudi Arabia, and the Houthi forces supported by Iran, who have controlled governorates and cities, including Sanaa, since September 2014.
