Mohamed Salah scored a comeback. The Egyptian forward wore a Liverpool jersey for the first time on Saturday following the win over Newcastle United on New Year’s Day. In his return match, the Allreds blew away Brentford 4-1.
Salah came off the bench when Diogo Jota was injured in the first half. It was his first club match for Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a hamstring injury. The 31-year-old forward scored his 19th goal of the season in all competitions to give Liverpool a sixth win in their last seven league games.
Darwin Nunez made a spectacular chip from Jota’s head pass in the first half at the GTech Community Stadium. Liverpool took the lead in the 35th minute. However, in the 43rd minute Jota was injured after colliding with teammate McAllister. His injury left coach Jurgen Klopp worried. Salah entered the field as a replacement for the Portuguese.
Salah wasted the opportunity in the beginning. Luis Diaz’s cross hits his feet and goes out. Later Virgil Von Dijk got the ball on the head but disappointed with a poor finish. The Egyptian forward atoned a minute later. He doubled the lead in the 65th minute through McAllister.
Salah also wrote his name in the goal scorer’s book. In the 67th minute, he made it 3-0 with a high Konakuni shot on a Cody Gakpo flick.
Brentford hit back with a goal seven minutes later. Tony shook the net when Reguilon’s shot was deflected by Kelleher.
Liverpool didn’t stop. In the 86th minute, Gakpo scored the fourth goal with a low shot after Nathan Collins made a mistake clearing the ball.
With this win after 25 matches, Liverpool consolidated the top spot. Klopp’s men are five points ahead of second-placed Man City. 57 points after the German coach’s first win at Brentford. However, Man City played two matches less.
