Almost all judges in a Brazilian court agreed and ruled that the prison sentence handed down in Italy to former AC Milan and Brazil star Robinho will also apply in Brazil. With that, they said in the verdict, Robinho must serve 9 years in prison in Brazil.
Robinho also played for Real Madrid and Man City. Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice ruled against Robinho by a 9-2 vote.
Robinho, 40, was sentenced to 9 years in prison in Italy for rape. In 2013, an Italian court convicted AC Milan of participating in a gang rape during a game.
Italy tried to enforce Robinho’s prison sentence in their country. However, Brazil does not extradite its citizens to other countries. But even that does not match Robinho’s release. He should be punished in his own country.
A 15-judge panel of the Superior Court in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, had to decide whether Robinho could be prosecuted under the 2017 Latin American Immigration Act.
Robinho’s lawyer, José Eduardo Rangel de Alquim, said he would appeal against the Brazilian Supreme Court’s order against Robinho. At the same time, he will appeal to the court not to arrest the former player until the appeal is resolved.
“Robinho is here and ready to face the judge,” the lawyer said. Or if any official goes to him, he will accept it, not oppose it.’
Alkim also said, ‘Our first goal now is to cancel the arrest warrant on sight. We will appeal that he serve the sentence of imprisonment, but only after the appeal process is over.’
