Three jewelery shops and a house were robbed in Hajiganj market of Charbhadrasan in Faridpur. A group of robbers of 30-40 people came with a trawler and tied up the night watchmen and looted goods worth about 20 lakh rupees.
The incident took place at Hajiganj market of the upazila around 2 o’clock on Monday (February 19).
The jewelery shops robbed were Prafulla Karmakar’s Pushpita Jewellers, Srikanth Karmakar’s Asha Jewelers and Gopinath Karmakar’s New Sujala Jewelers and Zubair Mollah’s residence.
Locals said that there was movement of some people late at night on waterways and roads on the occasion of Urs in Atarshi of Sadarpur upazila. The robbers tied up whoever they found on the street. People rescued them after receiving information.
A person named Zubair Mallya said, ‘I heard the shutter of the shop open around 2 am and came downstairs. When I asked who threatened me there, the robbers came and broke the screw gate of my building and entered. Then 10-12 people broke the door of the third floor and entered the house and beat me. Later they looted four bags of gold ornaments and two lakhs in cash.’
Gold traders Prafulla Karmakar, Srikanth Karmakar and Gepinath Karmakar said that none of them were in the shop at the time of the incident. After getting the news, they came to the market and saw that the lock of the shutter of their shop was cut. The robbers broke the chest and looted 10 and a half loads of gold ornaments, 420 loads of silver ornaments and 1 lakh 25 thousand taka.
Kabirul Alam Bepari, president of Char Hajiganj Hat Bazar Merchants Cooperative Association, said there were 30-40 people in the bandit. At around 1 am, they tied the hands and feet of four night watchmen and locked the office of the merchant association and locked them there. Then the robbery started.’
In this regard, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Charbhadrasan police station, Muhammad Abdul Wahab, said that the matter will be investigated and action will be taken.
