I’m not losing hope, I have two children, the expert responds to the harsh reports of scientists about global warming

The green newsfilter comments on the news about the protection of the planet from the past week.

  • The report on climate risks also warns Europe against frozen bacteria and contaminated food.
  • Other large animals were dropped from the amendment making it easier to shoot bears.

In the last issue of Zelený newsfilter, the news that the majority of leading UN scientists do not believe in success in the fight against the climate crisis resonated. Survey between them the British newspaper The Guardian did380 scientists participated in it.

Three quarters of respondents expect warming above the critical threshold of 2 degrees Celsius by the end of this century. As a result, according to them, there will be social upheavals, famines, mass migration and armed conflicts.

Europe is even worse off than the rest of the world – warming here is twice as high as elsewhere in the world, reminds the head of the influential European Environmental Agency Leena Ylä-Mononen.

This is reason enough for the European Union to be a leader in the fight against the climate crisis and not wait for others. “But the key will be to convince our global partners like the United States, China or India to step up their steps, because they are the biggest polluters,” he says. “There’s no reason to lose hope, we can’t and it doesn’t help. I didn’t lose her personally. I have two children and I still hope that they will have a habitable planet.’

To critics who say economic and economic growth is more important, he says: “Economic growth cannot exist on a planet that is not sustainable.”

Her argument is also confirmed by economic analyses. One of the last ones left pending review, says that every 1 degree Celsius increase in global temperature results in a 12 percent drop in world GDP. The authors are two economists from Harvard University and Northwestern University in the USA.

What is your opinion on it? Do you think it makes sense to choose between economic growth and protecting the planet? If so, what should take precedence and at what cost? Write what you think about it in the discussion of this article.

Stronger measures must be taken to protect people from contaminated food, resistant bacteria and pollution caused by the climate crisis, they warn in a report published last week experts of the European Environmental Agency – EEA for short.

Its director Leena Ylä-Mononen spoke about them at a conference in Bratislava and with Denník N. Slovakia warned of drought and floods. “The problem is water, its lack and drought, which is already plaguing Slovakia and affecting the economy,” she said. Extreme drought has afflicted the country several times, most recently two years ago.

The opposite extreme is represented by floods, which are stronger and occur more easily on dry soil during heavy downpours. “You have large rivers and a dense network of waterways, so this is a high-risk area.” However, she also appreciated that several anti-flood measures have already been implemented, especially in the Danube basin.
