MOSCOW – A leading Russian newspaper published a major report stating President Vladimir Putin had hinted that World War III between Moscow and NATO countries is getting closer.

The report came after Putin warned that a long-range strike launched into Russian territory from Ukraine would bring NATO countries closer to direct confrontation with Moscow.

The massive fighting that has taken place in Ukraine for more than two years has raised the possibility of another global conflict.

NATO countries are eager to reduce the chances of violence spreading beyond their borders. When providing military aid and weapons to Ukraine, they were clearly assisting Kyiv’s defense against Moscow’s forces, and were not a party to the war.

However, this did not prevent hostilities from becoming the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.

NATO countries are now starting to openly allow Ukraine to use the weapons they supply to attack internationally recognized Russian territory.

The US, which has been the most vocal opponent of Ukraine’s use of Western weapons to counter-invade Russia, has indicated this week that it may “adjust” its policy, but has not withdrawn its opposition.

Earlier this week, Putin said NATO countries, especially those based in Europe, must be fully aware of what is at stake by allowing Ukraine to attack Russian territory using weapons they supply.

“They should remember that their country is a small and densely populated country, which is a factor that must be taken into account before they start talking about incursions deep into Russian territory,” the Russian leader said.
