Promising pole vaulter Valters Kreis achieved the highest result in the athletics “Kuldīga Katrīna Cup” on Saturday.
Last year the best Latvian track and field athlete Kreišs won the pole vault with a leap of 5.53 metres. The twenty-year-old athlete tried to improve by one centimeter on his best result of the season obtained two days ago, but did not overcome the barrier set at 5.61 metres.
The result of 5.53 meters gave Kreis 1138 points and was the highest performance of all participants. Before the weekend’s competition, Kreis shared 14th place on the list of this season’s best pole vaulters with a jump of 5.60 meters.
A close fight for victory took place at the distance of 400 meters, where Oskars Pastors won with a final time of 48.10 seconds, beating Austri Karpinski by 0.12 seconds. In the women’s competition the host also won over this distance: Invida Mauriņa was the fastest with a final time of 56.21 seconds.
In the women’s long jump, third was Kitty Paula Melnbarde with a jump of exactly 6.00 metres, while the Ukrainian Irina Nerubalshchik won with 6.32 metres. Among the Latvian men, the longest jump went to Aleksis Gailītis – 6.90 metres, which gave him sixth place – but the victory was taken by Lithuania’s Marjus Vadeiķis with a long jump of 7.53 metres.
In the 60 meter hurdles sprint Daniela Lasmane took fourth place with a time of 8.60 seconds, but the victory was won by Slovenian Nika Glojarniča – the finish in 8.11 seconds gave her the second highest result after Kreiš . For the men, Ralf Zazerski took second, finishing in 8.07 seconds and losing to Britain’s Jake Porter by four hundredths of a second.
The third highest result in the Katrina Cup was achieved by Australian Sam Blake in the 1500 meters, where he won over this distance with a finish in three minutes and 41.93 seconds, while Nikita Bogdanov took fourth place (3:52.01) . In the 800 meters the third result was obtained by Evelina Krista Sitnik (2:14.05), while the fastest was the Turkish Dileka Kocaka (2:03.79).
As in the long jump, Lithuania’s representative won the 60-meter sprint, Adam Dambrauskas finishing in 6.69 seconds, while Aleksis Peltsmanis came fifth with a finish 0.16 seconds later. The women’s 60 meters was won by the Dutch Izabela van den Berg, who finished in 7.55 seconds, while Laura ķirse and Beāte Buka placed fifth and sixth with a difference of one hundredth (7.86 and 7.87) .
Estonia’s Mia Tillman won the women’s pole vault with 4.00 meters, while Nikola Trasune placed fifth with 3.70 meters. This year the matches had the status of “Challenger” level competition: this will give athletes the opportunity to fight for valuable ranking points in qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The athletics “Kuldīgas Katrīna Cup” was held for the 12th time.
