Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani is coming to Bangladesh on a two-day state visit. Human Rights Watch’s Middle East and North Africa deputy director Michael Page said that the Emir of Qatar’s visit is not only to meet with heads of state. Michael Page said it is very important for Qatar, Bangladesh and Nepal to have diplomatic talks on long-term labor relations. As the reason, he thinks, about 44 percent of Qatar’s population are immigrants. However, migrant workers there are facing severe abuse. Therefore, he also mentioned that now is the time to discuss the issue of protection of migrant workers with the Emir of Qatar.
Michael Page also pointed out that while the Qatari authorities have implemented labor reforms, their implementation has been poor. During Amir’s visit, he demanded to ensure the protection of migrant workers by updating and implementing the labor agreements.
