The most popular is probably the 16:8 method, which is also known as the so-called 8-hour diet. With this variant, a person fasts for 16 hours a day. In the remaining eight hours, he eats two meals.
But the Prime Minister of Britain adjusted his diet to his liking. He observes intermittent fasting from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday morning, i.e. about 36 hours of fasting. “And for the rest of the week I can indulge in all the sweet treats I like,” Rishi Sunak told BBC News. But is this practice healthy? That’s what Blesk asked leading nutritionists.
This is another fashion issue
“Our results on long-term adherence to intermittent fasting are very contradictory, in most cases this path is unsuccessful and ultimately leads to weight gain. For this method to be meaningful, it must be accompanied by a total change in lifestyle, the right choice of foods and the overall composition of the diet.” explains RNDr. Pavel Suchánek, expert guarantor of FitBee nutrition consultancy and adds:
“Furthermore, this change needs to be supported with appropriate and regular physical activity. The result of intermittent fasting is weight loss, but mainly due to dehydration and loss of active muscle mass. And this is not appropriate and beneficial to health, moreover, in the long term it leads to the yo-yo effect.
The fasting method is not suitable for everyone
According to nutritional therapist Věra Boháčová from the Healthy Nutrition Forum, these fasts are not suitable for everyone. “It must be remembered that energy may be lacking, not everyone tolerates fasts well psychologically. In addition, there are groups of people for whom such a regimen is clearly unsuitable – children, teenagers, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people who must follow a regular diet thanks to a diet (e.g. diabetics) or people regularly taking medication that, for example, must be consumed after meals. And as the happiest, I don’t even see the argument that if I fast for 36 hours, then I can indulge in “all the sweets I like” for the rest of the week.”
