Only she has not made the decision explicit. But according to opposition leaders and legislators and other sources familiar with the movements in the right-wing parties, it is established that the former senator, former deputy and former Minister of Labor will go for the big seat at La Moneda.
That is Plan A. Let Evelyn Rose Matthei Fornet be the opposition presidential candidate. Plan B is for her to run for re-election as mayor of Providencia.
The directors of the UDI and RN, leaders of Evópoli, conservative sectors of the business and academic spheres and, it is said, also segments that are identified with Republicans are leaning towards the first.
Few in the opposition choose the second path, because although they know that Matthei would be assured of victory in the re-nomination of the communal leadership, “it would be wasting an excellent presidential candidate” as a right-wing legislator commented.

It was later learned that Gonzalo Blumel, Jaime Bellolio, Paula Daza, Juan Luis Ossa, Isabel Plá, Alfredo Moreno, Karla Rubilar among others and other figures on the right are working on the implementation of Plan A. Several former ministers of state and linked to conservative study centers.
Several sources confirm that there is a team that would be designing a first approach to a program or at least an idea of content as a proposal for a future Government, addressing issues such as public security, health, education, growth and investment and even drawing a novel approach from the right on women’s rights, which could be a feature of Evelyn Matthei’s campaign.

In what context does all this occur? Evelyn Matthei scores around 30 percent in all polls. She is surpassing José Antonio Kast, the far-right presidential candidate, by more than ten points. It has no real competitor in Chile Vamos, and there is no interest in RN or Evópoli in raising any option or that they have a letter to do so. Analysis in opposition parties, think tanks linked to the right, polling companies and right-wing academic circles maintain, moreover, that the opposition has ample chance of winning the 2025 presidential elections.
