Petro proposes that the Vatican is the host of peace conversations with the ELN

Madrid (Europa Press) .- The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, proposed on Monday after meeting with Pope Leo XIV in the Holy See that the Vatican is hosting the new peace conversations with the Guerrillas of the National Liberation Army (ELN).

“They want to hold meetings in Cuba, in Venezuela. (…) I spoke with the Pope of this issue: how could the Vatican be the headquarters of the new low peace conversations, it can be a naivety of mine, the belief (of) that the spirit of effective love covers the greed and leads us to peace,” he said in a video shared by his office.

Petro said that the ELN can have “a second chance”, after there “came to commit a massacre” and has “forgotten its revolutionary principles”, in reference to the attacks registered in the Catatumbo region.

“He forgot that (…) there was an effective love theory that is nothing more than the love of the poor, the preferential option for the poor and who are killing the poor, 100 peasants of the Catatumbo only because the flags of change and transformation changed them for the flags of the Mexican rackets and folded and kneel before them,” he said.

The Colombian president announced in mid -January the rupture of negotiations with the ELN in response to the renewed wave of violence in Catatumbo, a region that has traditionally been a space for confrontation between this guerrillas and the already dissolved Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
