Pedro Juan prison intervened after massacre among inmates

ASSUMPTION. The Vice Minister of Criminal Policy, Rodrigo Nicora, confirmed that the Pedro Juan Caballero prison is now under intervention after the massacre that claimed the lives of four inmates and left another six seriously injured on Wednesday afternoon.

Nicora noted that the jail’s intervention seeks to prevent future violent incidents, ensuring that strict controls are being implemented to avoid such situations. However, he recognized that corruption within the prison system facilitates communication and coordination between criminal factions, allowing the planning of actions both inside and outside the facilities.

The vice minister highlighted the need to combat this corruption through personnel changes, rotation of directors and the carrying out of internal summaries to identify and sanction those who collaborate with criminal organizations.

The conflict, which broke out between members of the First Capital Command (PCC) and the Rotela Clan, was triggered when an inmate from the latter faction returned from an administrative hearing and encountered another inmate not affiliated with any criminal organization. The encounter led to a physical confrontation that quickly escalated, involving knives and firearms.
