The authorities of the San Juan de Dios General Hospital and of Ministry of Health Public and Social Assistance (MSPAS) announced that this Wednesday, March 6, patients will be transferred to other healthcare centers due to the overpopulation that is observed, mainly in the Adult Emergency area.

Dr. Edwin Bravo explained that during the morning hours alone, 11 Traumatology patients were referred to the healthcare centers of Antigua Guatemala, in the department of Sacatepéquez; and that of Villa Nueva, Guatemala.

“This situation is due to the fact that there is still overpopulation and it is operating 24 hours a day. More than 19 surgeries were performed and, despite this, there is no decrease in overpopulation, so there was a need to ask for support from healthcare centers,” he said.

He added that all the operations that these people require are urgent, since there is a need to care for traumatized patients with fractures in the skull, abdominal and pelvic areas.

The interviewee shared as an example to demonstrate the situation they face that in just one hour, five people affected by traffic accidents entered, most of them by motorcycle.

Given this scenario of high demand and the lack of medicines and medical-surgical materials, Bravo pointed out that the option available is to continue doubling the shifts.

“There is an effort on the part of all the staff, who work as if there were a disaster, an earthquake, practically. We urgently need financial support so that San Juan de Dios can free himself and resolve many of the things he has, since it is not just a situation,” he pointed out.

Hospital shortage

In a press conference, the directors of San Juan de Dios and the Minister of Health, Oscar Cordón, referred to the supply situation observed in that center.

They explained that 220 medications, out of a total of 658 managed, are required for emergencies and are those in greatest demand, including disposable gloves, gowns, silk for suturing, endotracheal tubes, masks and umbilical clamps.

It is planned that, in less than 48 hours, supplies can be received to address complications in the hospital to restore services next week.

To follow up on this issue, a technical table was installed made up of suppliers, administrators, financial administrators, legal parties, doctors, among others. The first meeting they will hold to seek to definitively solve the crisis will be this Friday.
