Patient, doctor, bed: statistics revealed – 2024-03-08 11:08:15

According to the data of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the EU Statistical Office (Eurostat), the number of hospital beds and doctors per person in the world has been announced. Turkey has the lowest number of doctors per capita in Europe. In Turkey, there are 218 doctors per 100,000 people, while in Greece, this figure is 629, which is a high indicator. Experts worry that if the rate of referrals to doctors continues to increase by 25 percent every year, in a few years they will not be able to find doctors and hospitals to see patients. Azerbaijan is not included in these statistics.

I wonder what the situation is like in our country?

According to the official information released by the State Statistics Committee, in our country athere are 320 doctors per 100,000 people. As for beds, there are 370 beds per 100,000 people.

On the issue Member of the Health Committee of the Milli Majlis, Mushfiq Mammadli Publika.azmade a statement to

He drew attention to the fact that the situation for Azerbaijan is not encouraging compared to indicators in other countries:

“We have to compare the low number of doctors with normal days as well as in difficult times. At this time, we will see better that the number of doctors is small. If we take the flow of residents to other countries, especially to Germany, the lack of doctors in the regions, and the average age of doctors, after 4-5 years we may face a different picture. Steps must be taken to manage these processes. The working conditions of doctors should be brought back to normal. Currently, the work schedule for doctors is hectic. The patient burden is too high. This is not adequate with the salary received for that job. We see that the desired conditions for the legal protection of doctors and the protection of their physical and mental health are not being created. After the compulsory medical insurance, the number of patients’ applications increased even more. This can lead to the flow of young doctors abroad, and the flow of middle-aged doctors to the private sector.

The deputy added that we are facing the problem of training and retaining medical staff in the country:

“This may ultimately lead to pressure in the public sector, which includes more services sector. For this, increasing access to the funds in the insurance fund, especially facilitating admission to medical institutions that play the role of basic education, and raising the material and technical support of the pedagogical staff there, including the salary, is the main condition. Secondly, it is very important to seriously approach the right personnel policy in the regions. In addition, we must support the advancement of the region’s youth in various career stages. Unfortunately, at present, people who have worked in the center are chosen for appointments in health institutions and TABIB. This ultimately reduces the interest and desire to work in the regions. The financing of our health care is already 3 billion. It has approached 307 million. This is a very, very large number. Smart use of it will play an important role both in the development of the health sector and in the creation of the personnel base.”

Uzeyir Rahimov, Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine, Chairman of the Azerbaijan Cardiology Society said that Azerbaijan was not included in those ranks due to the lack of statistics:

“I don’t think there is a shortage of doctors and beds in our country. The statistics are based on ignorance. No one can complain that there was no room, I did not sleep in the hospital. This situation is not the same in Turkey and other European countries. I can give an example in my field that if a patient applies to our hospital for angiography and heart surgery, he can pass all examinations. The patient is given 1 month in Turkey, and 7 months in European countries. Therefore, I consider the situation satisfactory.”

The teacher of the medical faculty of Cukurova University, Prof.Dr. Ersin AkpinarAccording to him, in 2021, the number of requests to the doctor increased from 8 per person to 10 in 2022:

“In 2022, total requests to family doctors will reach 333 million. This is a 40 percent increase compared to previous years’ applications. This means that doctors spend most of their time examining and prescribing drugs. This is one of the factors that increase the problems in fulfilling requests. It is impossible to provide quality health care without moving to a system such as referral of patients from family doctors to hospitals. 85 percent of health problems in the world are solved by the family medicine system. In our country, one family doctor has an average of 3,500 people. It is necessary to strengthen the centers of family doctors.
