Viennese patient advocate Gerhard Jelinek against further hurdles in access to specialists

Vienna (OTS) The Viennese nursing and patient advocate, Dr. Gerhard Jelinek, takes a critical stance on the recent proposals made by ÖGK deputy chairman Andreas Huss to restrict free access to specialists: “The proposal comes at a time when family doctors are overloaded and many patients are not general practitioners at all *find more inside. This makes home visits for immobile patients even rarer. In this situation, it is incomprehensible to discuss creating an additional hurdle for patients to access medical care. At the same time, it assumes that patients are unable to assess whether they actually need specialist treatment. Now it’s about putting all our energy into expanding the health system so that patients can find the general medical AND specialist care they need close to home and barrier-free.” (Conclusion)
