“Patients at the UKH Lorenz Böhler are left out in the cold” – Clear communication required
Vienna (OTS) – Both the Vienna nursing and patient advocacy group and the patient ombudsman of the Vienna Medical Association express serious allegations against AUVA. Contrary to the AUVA’s promises, there is currently no question of maintaining “normal operations” at the UKH Lorenz Böhler – even if only for a short time. Rather, patients received cancellations of operations, but were not given a new date. ****
In addition, patients who have already been operated on at the Lorenz Böhler and now require a follow-up operation – for example a plate removal – are being rejected by the Meidling Trauma Center, and other hospitals in Vienna are currently refusing to continue the corresponding treatments. This was pointed out by Viennese nursing and patient advocate Gerhard Jelinek, who identified a “massive uncertainty among patients, also due to the catastrophic communication behavior of the AUVA”.
The patient ombudsman of the Medical Association for Vienna, Thomas Holzgruber, argues similarly, who sees the sudden and unexpected closure of the UKH Lorenz Böhler as a “fatal lack of care for patients in Vienna” – those affected have literally been “left out in the cold”. From his point of view, the current situation represents organizational negligence on the part of AUVA, which means that patients whose treatment is delayed are entitled to assert claims for damages, i.e. compensation for pain and suffering, possibly treatment costs in private hospitals, etc., against the hospital provider, i.e. AUVA . This ultimately involves a performance obligation “that is simply not being met at the moment”.
The Vienna Nursing and Patient Advocate as well as the patient ombudsman of the Medical Association for Vienna are therefore demanding from the AUVA that patients who have already received promises of treatment, such as promises of operations and the like, be proactively informed as to whether the appointments will now be kept If not, when, where and by whom the treatment will be continued. They also encourage rapid support for patients for replacement appointments for canceled operations from the AUVA, a compensation fund and the establishment of a hotline in order to ensure “quick and clear communication of the planned resettlement steps, i.e. which areas of the UKH Lorenz Böhler are still there and how in operation for a long time, what capacities will be relocated where and what the situation will look like with the outpatient clinic and the operation of the operating room.
