Parliament / What did the workers at the Elefsina Shipyards ask from SYRIZA-PS

The demands of the workers are specific, fair and reasonable, noted MPs and officials of SYRIZA-PS

Their intense concerns about her course of the Shipyards but also about the precariousness of their jobs expressed by employees of Elefsina Shipyards to the Heads of Departments and executives of SYRIZA-PS in a meeting they had in Parliament.

The major topic of discussion was his course consolidation plan of the Elefsina Shipyards as well as the Company’s choice to proceed with employee layoffs, in violation of the terms of the reorganization plan, as it has been validated by the competent court. THE decision on layoffs had already been announced since February and questions are certainly being raised by the actions of the new Administration as well as by the attitude and management of the issue by the Government, given that one of the reasons that the consolidation procedure was chosen, instead of the bankruptcy procedure, was among others and saving jobs in the Shipyards.

The Minister of Labor and Social Security George Gavrilosthe Head of National Defense Evangelos Apostolakis and the Head of Finance Nikos Pappas met on Wednesday April 3 at Parliament with representatives of the Elefsina Shipyard Workers’ Association (SENE). The meeting was also attended by Marilisa Xenogiannakopouloumember of the Central Committee and Political Secretariat of SYRIZA – P.S.

The workers expressed their strong concerns about the course of the Shipyards and also about the insecurity of their jobs. They informed the MPs that it exists immediate danger to continue the layoffs resulting in hundreds of workers being unemployed and the Shipyards themselves losing the experience and know-how that these workers have, with all that entails.

The announcement for the dismissal of all employees, without being accompanied by one plan to rehire them with specific working conditions which will be defined by the framework of Collective Agreements, challenge what is provided for in Law 4695/2022 and certainly do not guarantee the working future of the approximately 600 workers at the Elefsina Shipyards.

The demands of the workers are specifically, fairly and reasonably. They request that their dismissed colleagues return to their positions, that the agreement be respected, as defined in Law 4695/2022 and reflected in the reorganization plan, that the workers at the Shipyards be protected until the transfer of all the company’s assets, as foreseen and thereafter to be rehired with collective labor agreements.

The discussion between the MPs and the representatives of the employees was particularly constructive as there was a detailed update on the course of the consolidation plan and on the current situation at the Elefsina Shipyards and the employee representatives were given the opportunity to express their demands in detail and clearly.

The Heads of Departments who participated in the meeting they pledged to highlight this serious issue through parliamentary scrutiny and to ask the Government to be consistent with the Bill that it brought to the Parliament but also with what the parties involved have expressly agreed upon.
