PAN promotes reform for the possibility of exercising legitimate defense

Deputy Santiago Torreblanca Engell (PAN) proposed reforming article 10 of the Political Constitution, with the aim of adding that whoever owns an “establishment, dedicated to commercial activity, located in a building”, has the right to possess weapons for their safety. and legitimate defense. With the exception of those prohibited by Federal Law and those reserved for the exclusive use of the permanent Armed Forces and reserve bodies.

According to the legislator, the proposal has two main objectives: “One, to give back to families who have a business or who work in one the possibility of exercising a legitimate and morally valid defense against abuses committed by criminals, to defend their assets, their freedom or their lives, and two, to be a mechanism that discourages crime.”

The document indicates that this last action would take place in two aspects. The first is the criminal who is not a professional and is not armed, who will think twice before committing a crime in a commercial establishment, and the second, armed criminals or those with greater capacities for violence will know that they may encounter resistance. and they will also be afraid of losing their own lives.

According to the National Company Victimization Survey (ENVE) 2022 by Inegi, which contains the estimated number of economic units in the private sector that were victims of crime during 2021, it states that in Mexico City in 75.2 percent of assaults In commercial establishments the criminal used a firearm, and in 15.2 percent of the affected businesses he mentioned that the crime was perpetrated with a sharp weapon.

According to the businessmen, in 60.9% of the cases it was a single person and in 19.1% the crime was carried out by people belonging to a gang.

He adds that the results obtained from the businesses indicate that a greater number of extortions were recorded in person with 47.8%, while 37.4% happened by telephone, and 12.2% through electronic means.

Given this panorama, deputy Torreblanca Engell emphasizes that for people who have a business or work in one, this is devastating, since it seems inevitable that they are condemned to suffer this type of crime constantly.

For this reason, it considers that it should be perfectly legitimate for families to be able to defend themselves, recover their right to security, to tranquility, to have assets, to live happily and to be free.
