The United States says the Palestinians should seek statehood through direct negotiations between the parties, not the United Nations. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller made this comment on Wednesday (April 3). British news agency Reuters reported this news.

On Tuesday, the Palestinian Authority called on the United Nations to reconsider its bid for full membership. This application was made in 2011. Since 2012, Palestine has been recognized as a non-member observer state of the United Nations. In this regard, the position of the United States, Israel’s most important ally, is important. Because through them an idea about the position of Israel is obtained.

To become a full member of the United Nations, the approval of the 15-member Security Council is required. The US has veto power in the Security Council. Approval here requires a two-thirds vote of the 193-member General Assembly.

Asked whether the United States would veto the Palestinian request at the Security Council, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said he did not want to speculate on what might happen.

He said that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state should be done through direct negotiations between the parties concerned, regarding Israel’s security guarantees. Currently we have this initiative. But not at the United Nations.

Palestine has taken this initiative to become a full member of the United Nations as the war between Hamas and Israel in Gaza approaches six months. In addition, Israel is regularly expanding settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Malta’s UN envoy Vanessa Fraser, who presides over the UN Security Council, said on Wednesday that Palestine’s appeal had been circulated among council members. We will consult with each Member State to consider the appropriate way forward.

Earlier on Monday, Palestine’s UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour said that their goal is for the Security Council to take a decision at the ministerial meeting on April 18. But no poll schedule has been fixed yet.

Since the signing of the Oslo Accords between Israel and the Palestinian Authority in the early 1990s, there has been no progress towards establishing an independent Palestinian state.
