New York – Palestine called, yesterday, Monday, for “urgent” international action to stop the “genocide” war carried out by Israel against the Palestinian people, warning of Israel’s threats to launch an attack on the city of Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip.
This came in three identical letters sent by the Permanent Representative of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, Ambassador Riyad Mansour, to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, the President of the Security Council for this month (Guyana), and the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Dennis Francis, “regarding the need to take action.” Urgent international call to stop the genocidal war waged by Israel against the Palestinian people.”
In his messages, Mansour warned of “Israeli threats to launch an attack on Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, where more than 1.4 million displaced citizens have taken refuge, along with a quarter of a million residents of the city.”
He pointed out that “in light of the continued paralysis of the Security Council, Israel launched its attack on Rafah, which resulted in the death of more than 164 Palestinians and the injury of hundreds of others within the past two days.”
He wondered: How can the loss of human life and genocide be justified? How can anyone justify the slaughter of more than 12,300 children who were supposedly protected under international humanitarian and human rights law?
He called on the Security Council and all countries to “take immediate action to assume their responsibilities, before it is too late, before life in Gaza is exposed to further destruction, and before international law is further torn apart.”
He called for “taking measures to protect the Palestinian people from Israel’s genocidal aggression and endless attempts to ethnically cleanse them and colonize their lands.”
On Sunday evening, the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation (official) said that the Israeli army had approved an operational plan to launch a ground operation in Rafah, which is the last refuge for the displaced in the stricken sector.
At dawn on Monday, the Israeli army launched a series of violent raids on various areas of the city, leading to the death and injury of dozens of Palestinians, including children and women, in clear disregard for international warnings of the consequences of invading the city, which was crowded with displaced people.
Since October 7, Israel has been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip, leaving as of Monday 28,340 martyrs and 67,984 injured, most of them children and women, in addition to thousands missing under the rubble, according to Palestinian and UN data, which led to Israel being put on trial for genocide crimes for the first time since.
