Painful relegation: the Israeli national team lost 4:1 to Iceland in the semi-finals of the Euro qualifiers

The Israeli soccer team lost 4:1 to Iceland this evening (Thursday) in Budapest and will not be in Euro 2024. Eran Zahavi squeezed a penalty and scored (31′), Gudmundsson equalized (39′) and Traustsson completed a turnaround in two minutes. Roy Rabivo was sent off (73), Zahavi missed his second penalty (80) and Gudmundsson scored twice more (83′ and 86′), after the Israeli team raised their hands.

Iceland will meet Ukraine, who beat Bosnia 1:2, for the Euro ticket match. The winner will be placed in Group 5, to which Belgium, Slovakia and Romania have already been drawn.

Israel has met Iceland five times in the past, and the encouraging statistic is that they have never lost to them. Three games ended in a draw (including two in the same Nations League campaign in which Israel finished first at home where the two played). The other three matches were friendly matches, with Israel winning two of them and one ending in a draw.

Coach Alon Hazan decided to start in midfield with Dor Peretz, Gadi Kinda and Gabi Kanikovsky, with Oskar Gluch, Neta Lavi and Muhammad Abu Fani waiting on the bench. On the right wing Anan Halaili was the favorite of Peni Lial Abda and the front part is completed by Dor Turgeman and Eran Zahavi. In the back, goalkeeper Omri Glazer started, with Eli Desa, Miguel Vitor, Shawn Goldberg and Roy Rabivo in front of him.
