The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Moldova, Mikhail Popshoy, compared the defense budget of his country with the “Real” football club. The Moldovan minister said that they have seriously increased the country’s defense budget, but some football clubs like “Real” spend more money.
Publika.az reports that the Moldovan minister pointed out that the country’s defense budget has increased by 68 percent in the last year, but it is still ridiculous:
“Because in the last 30 years, very small amounts like 0.3 percent of GDP have been allocated. In other words, almost nothing has been allocated. From time to time I am interested in the budgets of “Real” of Spain and other big clubs in Europe. Their budget is more than our investment in our national army.
Popshoy also noted that the defense budget should now be increased taking into account new challenges:
“One of these challenges is the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The amount required for the modernization of the army is 250 million euros.
It should be noted that last week the Secretary General of the Ministry of Defense of Moldova Valery Mija said that the government of Moldova approved the suspension of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE). The decision of the Moldovan government will enter into force 150 days after the notification is received by the contracting states. The bill will first be submitted to parliament for approval and then to President Maya Sandu.
