For pigs and cattle, the €3.1 billion in existing agricultural subsidies will be used to finance the conversion of all farms to straw farming – VGT demo in front of Parliament

The company supports agriculture with enormous sums of money and the company expects straw bedding for pigs and cattle, so the company’s funding must also be used for this.

Vienna (OTS) The ongoing operation of a pigsty with deep straw and double space means only 35 cents per kg of pork higher costs in ongoing operations. That’s ridiculous. The costs for the renovation are not ridiculous. That is why the SPÖ submitted a proposal in the last Agriculture Committee to finance this restructuring from the pot of €3.1 billion in agricultural subsidies that is available: “The funds given must be focused and, above all, targeted on increasing the standards for the husbandry Animals, especially pigs and cattle, should be relocated. In particular, it is important to invest in sufficiently large littered lying areas, as these are crucial for animal welfare.” The application further states that the “structured fully slatted floor” version, as proposed by the ÖVP, is not sufficient to ban the fully slatted floor to reach. However, the two government parties postponed the application with their majority in the committee.

That’s why the VGT is protesting today in front of the parliament in Vienna on the occasion of the plenary session there against the completely slatted floor for pigs. Banners are used to draw attention to the fact that the ÖVP is denying straw to the pigs, especially through their perfidious trick of a new fully slatted floor, which they sell as a ban on fully slatted floors in new buildings and renovations. In reality, it is about a ban on the so-called unstructured fully slatted floor, while a “structured” fully slatted floor with a reduced slatted density on a third of the area should remain permitted.

VGT chairman DDr. Martin Balluch said: “The SPÖ is 100% right. “The company supports agriculture with enormous sums of money and the company expects straw bedding for pigs and cattle, so the company’s funding must also be used for this.“Consumers want to reach for the cheapest meat on offer without having to think, but they also want the state to ensure that only meat from straw farming is on offer. The success story of the ban on keeping laying hens in cages proves this claim. In this year’s Easter shop
There are no cooked and dyed Easter eggs from foreign cages in the markets of the large chain stores, the origin and husbandry are labeled in an exemplary manner. This is exactly what could happen with pork and beef from straw farming if the government accepts this SPÖ proposal.”
