Until last November, Martina was an active mother of Vojta (10) and Magdalenka (7). She raised children with her husband, worked as a saleswoman and thought of others. She regularly donated blood plasma and also volunteered to donate bone marrow. Everything looked positive and no one expected anything terrible to happen.

One day, however, Martina began to have mild tingling in her fingers, then in her palms and wrists, sometimes similar symptoms also appeared in her lower limbs. “Everything pointed to carpal tunnel disease, and the foot problems were attributed to vitamin and mineral deficiencies or stress,” Mr. Daniel recalls.

A rare disease

But within ten days, everything took a terrifying turn. Martina became a complete lager dependent on the help of others. They took her to the hospital and admitted her to neurology, where after all the results were done, they found out that it was the rarest form of Guillain-Barré syndrome, which is an autoimmune disease that damages the outer nervous system.

“Simply put, there will be a reduction in the neural connection between the spinal cord and the limbs. Martina could not feel her limbs, she suddenly lost control of her legs and arms. In short, her body completely shut down. He doesn’t even remember the first two months in the hospital.” Mr. Daniel describes for Blesk. No one knows why the disease occurred so suddenly. “Supposedly any small inflammation in the body can trigger it. Or even a stronger flu virus,” explains Mr. Daniel.

Total poisoning

In addition, there was another serious complication in the hospital, when after about a week of hospitalization, the doctors started a special treatment that was supposed to help Martina. Unfortunately, sepsis spread to the sick woman’s entire body from the catheters needed to exchange the blood plasma and life-threatening poisoning occurred.

Martina recovered from the worst and was transferred to a rehabilitation institution, where according to the latest information she should be until the end of May. Then she could finally return to her family after six months.

When Mr. Daniel talks about the tragedy that befell their family, it can be seen that not only he, but also the two children and also Martina herself are determined to fight for their common life to improve as much as possible.

“Raising two smaller children and taking care of my wife after release will be very difficult, but I refused the offer to be placed in institutional care, we would all suffer,” says Daniel, adding that he had promised in his marriage vows: For better or for worse .”

According to the doctors, Martina’s health will probably improve only slightly. The last report from the neurologist was that the mother of two children is severely disabled, dependent on the help of another person, and at the same time, due to her health condition, she is not able to act independently, she is not even able to sign.

Experts on the phone advised readers with psychological problems, addictions and other hardships directly in the Blesk editorial office.

Tie a spoon to your hand with a rubber band?

Doctors assume that in the future he will only be able to walk about fifty meters on his own, and a wheelchair will be necessary. The concerns mainly concern the condition of the hands, the mobility of which will probably not improve much in the future either. “He won’t even take a mug. If she wanted to eat herself, the doctors wrote that she would be able to do it with a spoon attached to her hand with a rubber band.” Mr. Daniel describes the cruel situation.

Home after half a year…

He visits his wife and children in a rehabilitation center twice a week and spends time together on weekends as well. Everyone is looking forward to the moment when Martina finally returns home to her family, but at the same time they are very worried about how they will manage the whole situation. He lives in a rented apartment, which is completely unsuitable for movement in a wheelchair. A big question is also who will take care of Martin when the children are at school and Mr. Daniel is at work.

To help the family, a collection was therefore created on the charity platform Donio. The contributions will be used mainly for the purchase of own housing and its adaptation to handicap accessibility, as well as for the provision of assistance care for Martina during the absence of other family members.

“Your help will allow us to focus on taking care of Martina and ensuring a normal life for our children. Thank you for every donation and every kindness shown. Your solidarity is a source of strength for us in difficult times.” adds Daniel Kříž.
